DENIAL "code of conduct" development thread.

Post by ral-clan »

Purpose: This is a thread to develop a "code of conduct" for Denial members. The purpose of the code will instruct users on what is acceptable and non-acceptable behavior in the forum. It will also instruct moderators on what he/she MUST do when a rule is infringed (to prevent disciplinary action from becoming subjective/arbitrary). It will also ensure that the duties of moderators are clearly defined and uniform.

Impetus: This thread has been opened after some PM discussion with Jeff (forum owner) where he suggested it be started. This code is being developed because of the recent escalation of "flame wars" on the forum.

Goal: develop a clear, numbered, publicly visible code within a reasonably fast period (two weeks from today?). Hopefully it will be a code that is based on common sense while not being Draconian.

Process: Draft version of the code will be assembled from ideas here, posted here for comments, then submitted to Jeff for final approval. Final version of the code of conduct will be made sticky in General Topic forum.

Please discuss and offer ideas.

Orion70 has proposed:
Moderators just have to check in other sections whether the posts are on-topic, and if they're not:

- Should they be offensive/spam/trolling, simply delete them and possibly if the behaviour is persistent, ban the member for a while;
- Should they be innocuous, put [OT] before the title.

MRaider suggested these rules might be good as in helping develop Denial rules:
Forum Guidelines

Mutual Respect
The Denial forum is an open community. Every user is entitled to their own personal opinions - however, mutual respect is expected. Though we encourage frank and open discussion, abuse, personal insults or threats directed towards any user will not be tolerated.

Posting New Threads
When starting new topics, please take care to post in the appropriate section of the forum and take a moment to look over recent topics for related threads. If there is already a thread relating to the subject, please reply to that rather than starting a new one. Duplicate threads on the same topic may be locked or deleted.

Thread Titles
Please use a meaningful thread title so that other users will have an idea what it relates to without having to open the thread to find out. Threads with deliberately misleading titles may be locked or deleted by a moderator.

Cross-posting
There is no need to cross-post in multiple sections as users can view the whole forum using the "View posts since last visit" link at the top of the index page.

Check which section you're posting in. Off topic posts will be moved by a moderator.

Posting Links
When posting links to other sites/images/videos etc. please ensure that you include a brief description of the content so that users can make an informed choice whether to follow the link before opening it. Posts with deliberately misleading titles or descriptions will be removed without notice.

Graphic/Potentially Offensive Images
We ask that potentially offensive images should either be linked or hidden inside a spoiler tag. They must be clearly labelled as such with a brief description explaining the nature of the content to enable other users to make an informed decision before clicking. Such images which are not hidden in this manner may be removed without notice. The moderators also reserve the right to remove any image without notice.

Profanity
Swearing is allowed, but not at other members. Please note the first paragraph above.

Signature text/images
Large image files / text blocks in user signatures are discouraged. You already have the ability to personalise your account with a user avatar so please keep signatures subtle. The moderators reserve the right to delete or edit them without notice.

Forum Moderation
Please remember, the Denial forum is provided to you free of charge. The moderation team give their time freely to help ensure things run as smoothly as possible at all times. Sometimes they will make decisions which you may not like, but please remember, in all matters relating to the forum their decisions are final and will not be open to debate.

Jeff-20 recently posted this in the "Off-Topic: Signatures" thread:
Ok, if you kids don't behave, I'm turning this car around, and we're all going back home!

Ok, new rule: No new posts containing signatures that make reference to any other member of the Denial, good or bad.
So I think we can consider this the first "official" rule.

There needs to be an anti-harassment policy, with harassment defined as any improper behaviour by a person that is directed at and is offensive to another person, and which that person knew or should reasonably have known would be unwelcome.

Here's a forum "agreement" that you have to accept to become a member of another forum I moderate... Maybe you can use some of the language.
For reference, this is the Agreement you agreed to when you first got your account at this forum.

You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, adult material, or otherwise in violation of any International or United States Federal law. You also agree not to post any copyrighted material unless you own the copyright or you have written consent from the owner of the copyrighted material. Spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are also forbidden on this forum.

Note that it is impossible for the staff or the owners of this forum to confirm the validity of posts. Please remember that we do not actively monitor the posted messages, and as such, are not responsible for the content contained within. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information presented. The posted messages express the views of the author, and not necessarily the views of this forum, its staff, its subsidiaries, or this forum's owner. Anyone who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to notify an administrator or moderator of this forum immediately. The staff and the owner of this forum reserve the right to remove objectionable content, within a reasonable time frame, if they determine that removal is necessary. This is a manual process, however, please realize that they may not be able to remove or edit particular messages immediately. This policy applies to member profile information as well.

You remain solely responsible for the content of your posted messages. Furthermore, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless the owners of this forum, any related websites to this forum, its staff, and its subsidiaries. The owners of this forum also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or any other related information collected on this service) in the event of a formal complaint or legal action arising from any situation caused by your use of this forum.

You have the ability, as you register, to choose your username. We advise that you keep the name appropriate. With this user account you are about to register, you agree to never give your password out to another person except an administrator, for your protection and for validity reasons. You also agree to NEVER use another person's account for any reason. We also HIGHLY recommend you use a complex and unique password for your account, to prevent account theft.

After you register and login to this forum, you will be able to fill out a detailed profile. It is your responsibility to present clean and accurate information. Any information the forum owner or staff determines to be inaccurate or vulgar in nature will be removed, with or without prior notice. Appropriate sanctions may be applicable.

Please note that with each post, your IP address is recorded, in the event that you need to be banned from this forum or your ISP contacted. This will only happen in the event of a major violation of this agreement.

Also note that the software places a cookie, a text file containing bits of information (such as your username and password), in your browser's cache. This is ONLY used to keep you logged in/out. The software does not collect or send any other form of information to your computer."
Also a post made by me in the "Forum Information & News" section after we had an outbreak of trolling. You can tell by the language and tone that it was written AFTER the outbreak and cleanup of the mess.
No trolling or feeding of trolls will be tolerated.

Trolling members will receive a 1 (one) week temporary ban. Future trolling will result in a permanent ban. Any member fanning the flames of said trolling posts runs the risk of receiving a 1 (one) week temporary ban. Future feeding of trolls will result in a permanent ban.

The moderators are unsympathetic to who you are, how long you have been a member, and how many posts you have. There will be no consideration taken as to how well you are liked as a member by others.

If you feel a post is trolling then use the "report to moderator" button. If we agree, the post will be removed, thread locked, or other action taken.

The action taken is up to us and is not up for debate.
And here's one titled "Please report bad threads" - we had a group of users that would rather post in spam threads than report them. AND there were a few dummies that actually clicked on those links! NEVER CLICK ON A SPAM LINK!!!! It's a sure way to get your machine infected and your personal information stolen. It was written with spam AND harassment in mind. We had 2 members receive week long bans and one permabanned over harassing another member.
n behalf of the moderator team, I'd like to thank the folks that have taken the time to report bad posts to us. I would also like to ask that everyone on the forum refrain from replying to spambots or to inflammatory posts made by trolls.

As a basic measure of safety, DO NOT CLICK on ANY link posted by a troll or a spambot. These links may infect your computer. If your computer gets infected then hackers, script kiddies, and other malicious individuals can either steal personal information, including forum logins, from you OR start using your computer to post that garbage to other forums.

Spambots are nuked on site. Trolls are immediately warned and/or banned from the site. It all depends on who it is and what they posted. If it's a duplicate user account then their other account may be temporarily, or even permanently banned from the site. Again, it's all about what was posted.

We do not tolerate hatred, bigotry, nudity, obscenity, defamation, outright lies, or accusations in posts. Since political and religious posts can make enemies out of friends they aren't allowed either. Please flag those threads and help us keep the forum clean for everyone's children, spouses, and parents.

If you flag a post that we don't think needs moderation, we'll be happy to tell you why we feel that way. If you post one that does need moderation, we might not tell you what we did but you will see the post disappear or be modified. Don't take any lack of reply personally - we DO appreciate bad posts being flagged!

Thanks! We appreciate your help in keeping the forum a safe place for all to visit and enjoy.
Anyway. Hope this helps some.

This is a good idea. I'm feeling better already.

Haha. Go to the oldest thread in this forum. I believe it is locked, but it was the first post on Denial and about rules.
