Re: Top 5 favorite computers

I tried to keep my list 8 bits wide, with the TI-99/4a being the only exception (and it's still kind of 8-bit, sort of...) :wink:

Re: Top 5 favorite computers

I'll bite...

In no particular order, they are:

C= VIC-20
C=64
Apple IIe (enhanced)
Atari 800XL
TI-99/4a

I love all retro computers to one degree or another, both those are my top 5. :)

Re: FPGA replacement for VIC I chip?

I bought 20 NTSC VIC chips (6560-101) from a surplus supplier in China a few years back - all were NOS and had never even been put into a socket before. I believe that 17 were good and 3 duds, but I got them for like $2.80/ea. IIRC. You can find them, if you peek & poke (not PEEK & POKE) aro...

Re: Grey function keys

I had heard once that it was an issue of timing - early C=64's got the mustard yellow F-keys and sometime during the last year of the VIC-20's production run, Commodore switched over to gray F-keys. I don't know if this was ever official... I had read it somewhere (years ago) and it seemed to make s...

Re: S-Video conversion possible as plug-and-play solution?

Nice!

I am going to send Ray a few wonky C=64 boards soon, so I may just send him my spare VIC-20CR board and have him do this as well.

This is so cool! Thanks for posting this!

Re: What failures have you had?

My VIC's have been very reliable over the years, but I have had a few bumps along the way... Original VIC: Voltage regulator that kept popping fuses CR VIC: 6502 6560-101 Bad resistor in audio circuit I also had a a component in one of my external RF modulators go kaput, but that's not necessarily a...

Re: Grey function keys

When I have to replace a keyboard on a VIC-20 and the replacement keyboard has gray F-key caps, I'll usually pluck them off and move the peanut butter colored keycaps over. I've had a couple of VIC-20's that have had the gray F-keys and something about it just doesn't look right to me. It's just my ...

Re: Strange looking 1541 ?

Yep... the 1541C. I had one as part of a system I got from Montgomery Grant many years ago... 64C, 1541C, amber monitor and a Commodore plotter. Later, I added a brown 1541 that someone had clipped to make it a permanent drive #9 and a VIC-1541 that someone installed device switches on, so it could ...

Re: Vic colours question? [SOLVED]

You can usually find them on ebay fairly easily. If you can get your hands on a multiport expander for the VIC (also not terribly difficult to find), most of them allow you to use several smaller RAM cartridges to add together. Like if you wanted to go to a 24K VIC-20, you could stack three 8K cartr...

Re: AMDEK VIDEO-300A amber Monitor for $15.

Ah, an amber monitor! This brings back memories of our old 64C system that we got from Montgomery Grant... 64C, amber monitor, 1541C and a little Commodore plotter that we never found a use for. I always loved amber screens, because they were a nice change from the green that everybody else had at t...

I could be here all day, so I'll just pick three for each of my favorite 16-bit platforms. For the ST: Elite, Typhoon Thompson in The Search for the Sea Child, Sundog: Frozen Legacy For the Amiga: It Came from the Desert, Nuclear War, The Three Stooges For the Mac: Glider, Dark Castle, Spacestation ...

Re: Best looking 8bit computer?

Since we're only talking looks, here... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e6/Atari-600xl.png The 800XL looked cool, sure, but the 600XL was the same, basic design in a smaller footprint. Really slick! i would also throw in a vote for the early TI-99/4a. A thing of beauty, that! At leas...

Re: Lots of Vic Stuff to Go!!

Do you still have that Cardkey numeric keypad? I have one already (along with the manual), but no disk! It'd be nice to have a spare and finally get my knuckles around that software.

Also, do you have a clearer image of the cartridges? It looks too blurry to see the labels on my screen.

Thanks!
