Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

I considered the S-VID mod since my LCD also has that input, but it violates one of my rules... VIC-20 must remain stock. I did some testing with an overlay tonight, and think that it may not be possible using the port supplied 1.022727 PH2 clock. Here is why... The main system clock is 14.318178 MH...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

Thanks, yes I know him. It would be nice to acquire a good condition 1084 or 1080 for this project, and I would certainly offer what it's worth. I have been doing some figuring while I cut the last bit of wood today. Just in for a break! Now that I am dedicated to keeping the original VIC output in ...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

Thanks, I am convinced now! My VIC will remain fully functional, and V2K will become a secondary display and sound system. Now I am even tossing around this idea... - Generate NTSC from my logic instead of VGA and go old-school CRT instead of VGA. - Overlay the new video right over the original VIC ...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

I was probably too harsh on the good ole 6560! On my NTSC enabled VGA monitor (above photo), the VIC actually looks great. Perhaps I should reconsider ghosting the original VIC video, and put this to a vote... (1) I continue as planned, all output redirected to my new VGA adapter and monitor, and no...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

The unmodified VIC-20 host will be completely running the show. My hardware is really just a bunch of fast counters and some SRAM. .... ok, LOTS of SRAM! Yes, I am certainly retargeting the video and sound, but the original 6502 is doing all of the heavy lifting, including running the OS, assembler,...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

Although I won't be able to put any large blocks of time into my project until the deep-freeze, I am trying to get at least a few minutes into it each day. In a week or two, i will be buried under 3 feet of snow, so V2K will get more attention! Last night, I found an old Donkey Kong cartridge with a...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

Thanks srowe, searching for "A0CBM" brings up a good stockpile of info I had not previously found when searching for Vic-20 cartridge info. This site seems to explain it all... http://comp.sys.cbm.narkive.com/0WNJAHD5/vic-20-cartridge-format From the link... Address______Hex value_____Deci...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

A quick question for the VIC-20 experts here... Reading info on expanded memory and cartridges, it appears that as long as there is code located on BLK5 (Address : $A000), then the VIC boots form there on power up. This is how a cartridge game starts up. So if I create a 32K expansion system that i...

Re: VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

Another goal of the V2K project is to enjoy 6502 programming without reliance on the modern world. All development of games and demos will be done directly on the VIC-20, and not on a PC. This is why the new 60/80 column VGA display will be nice... not staring at wavering NTSC for hours. When VIC-20...

VIC-2000 Expander. Modern Power Using Retro Parts!

Greets Denial! Winter is almost here for me again, and I am planning to take on another crazy retro project this year. This time, an expansion system that will bring my VIC-20 up a few levels in audio / video power. This project will be called The VIC-2000 Expansion Module , or just V2K for short. ...

Re: Capture 6560 Data From Cart Port

Amazing stuff!

It gets me charged to see what is still being done with the best computer ever made.
I soldered up a new A/V cable and tweaked my VIC output to look nice on my LCD.

My new project shall now commence.
I will start a new thread, and won't be checking this one.

Thanks,
Brad

Re: Capture 6560 Data From Cart Port

Thanks for the replies and ideas! I should probably explain what my goals are and what I like to do in my basement lab a little more. I like to travel back to the 80's and build projects using technologies that were available in the good days of computing. When I say 1980's components, I mean 74 log...

Re: Capture 6560 Data From Cart Port

Right, I just noticed that DIR is low, so the buffer direction is A=B and not the other way around. Looks like I will have to take a different approach. Right now, I am thinking of something like this... My expansion boots, expands RAM to capacity, then runs a new OS altogether. I would rather have ...

Capture 6560 Data From Cart Port

Greets to all Deniers! I am going to start a new project for my immortal VIC-20 that will connect to the cartridge port. At this point, I am just data gathering all I can on the port and how the VIC deals with memory remapping. My project will eventually need to intercept all data meant for the 656...

Vic-20... still keeps on tickin'

Once and a while, I unbox my Commodore collection, and power them up... http://lucidscience.com/temp/commodore.jpg The 2 VICs in my collection are still working perfectly. One is original, and on modded for composite video. The PET 4016 is the oldest of the gang, and it also works. Last week my Core...
