Re: Best looking 8bit computer?

No doubt: http://myretrocomputing.altervista.org/commodorecbm8032sk/popup/8032sk.jpg Porche, you know... Common misconception. Not true. This case was designed by Ira Velinski while working at Commodore. Ira designed the Max Machine case as well. Porche did design a case but it was not workable. Co...

Re: Why is the 40/80 col. display manager slowing the VIC?

This brings a more intricate question: Since the CPU runs slightly slower on an NTSC C64 than on the VIC-20, why would the VIC-20 with a display manager in 40 col. mode turn out to be slower than a C64 which also has to shuffle around 40 columns of 25 characters? (assuming both machines are NTSC) D...

Re: Why is the 40/80 col. display manager slowing the VIC?

I have one of those, but I've never tested it speed-wise. The unit uses a 6545 or compatible video chip, which is the same as in the PET. If I recall, the video memory IS mapped into regular memory. That said, it's probably a simple case of more characters to scroll = longer time. You can see the di...

I think it was fairly common to swap around data or address lines to make routing the wires easier (or to confuse people). The computer doesn't care if D0 goes to D0 on the ROM or D5 or whatever as long as the data is written to the rom with the correct bits in the correct location it will read cor...

Is there copy protection or simply code to set up registers of 6845? I don't understand what you mean with "code to set up registers of 6845". I removed the 2 ROMs from the cart. As they both carry 4096 bytes of data, they should be pin compatible with a 2732 or 2332. However, when I put ...

I was hoping for a manual for the UE. Perhaps now that your run is finished you could also publish the schematics? ;-) Don't get me wrong, I like the UE and the rom option seems very handy and more flexible than I thought it would be. Without documentation those features are un-accessable. You can't...

I got my expander and it's working great. I'm interested in perhaps adding BASIC4. I admit I'm a little rusty in VIC-20 technical details. Just to clarify does the expansion board accept EPROMS or regular ROMS? The pinout for ROMs or EPROMS is generally the same so your question only makes sense if...

The 32k expansion also has a ROM socket to add extra ROM options such as VICMON, Programmer's Aid and Super Expander. I got my expander and it's working great. Great, thanks. Iv'e got a massive pile of disks needing to be transfered.
If you use any of the batch imaging features let me know how it goes. So far I've had little feedback in that area. Thanks

Very nicely done! I like the esthetics of your site. You might want to have a darker "grey" for the background, so that it is easier to read the "white on grey" text. I see you have Ohio computers. Challenger's design look like they would make good models for building homebrew 6...

Ya, but a nice brown case would probably suit it better. Oh, and change the cartrige port and slow down the IEC, add another joystick port, and oh, lets update the processor as well....

er, nevermind something like that would never sell ;-)

Re: Should the VIC have had a true successor over the C16?

Do you think a VIC-20 compatible machine should have been produced instead of the Commodore 16? I have read the VIC was nothing more than smoke and mirrors to throw the Japanese off the scent of what C= were really working on and hence prevent hardware piracy (unlikely given the complexity of VIC-I...
