seems the version of my character editor that is being used here is not my latest version (which I apparently finished some time ago).

the latest version is at http://www.neoventures.org/retroCOMPUTE/chared.html

There's a little insert sheet that talks about plugging in your "Joystick Adaptor" before powering up the VIC. I assumed they meant joystick, but maybe there was a dongle protection system? It was a dongle. I have an original in a box with the dongle somewhere. Never got to use it since I...

The only computer I can think of with 16 columns would be various Sharp/Tandy Pocket Computers.

As for computers that use a CRT display, I would say that the Vic 20 wins for least columns. Even the ZX-81 had 32 columns.

If you had a chance to peek inside the unit ....is hard drive an old MFM unit, such as Seagate ST138?
The CMD's all used SCSI drives. Back in the day, 20 and 40 MB SCSI drives were quite common.

I believe that VicTerm (that came with the VicModem 1600) had both ASCII and PETSCII (C/G) Modes.

Dang, it's so much easier on the 64. However wired the joystick pins to the VIA must have been a sadist.

If I understand correctly, by wiring Select to +5V, you get access to buttons B and C. While you can rewire +5V to a different pin, I wonder if one paddle input can be used for Select. The paddle inputs are analogue potentiometers. Would it increase by one for every pulse the computer receives? The...

I'm going to suggest one other thing. Since the Vic uses redefined characters to display hi-res graphics and in order to get a full screen worth of graphics you need to use double size characters, I think it best to format the screen as as bytes running top to bottom then right to left... 0 20 1 21 ...

One other thing to remember with GOTO and GOSUB is that the interpretor starts searching with the next line if the target line number is higher than the current line, but with the first line if the target line number is lower than the next line number. So 100 FOR X=1 TO 10 110 GOSUB 200 120 NEXT X 1...

I have a vic-20 with a multi-slot cartridge and RAM expander all in one. It has dip switches on it so I can select which banks I want to enable. I don't remember any details though, because it is packed up in a box xomewhere. I do all my vic-20 work in VICE.

I have one set of Commodore paddles and a bunch of Atari 2600 paddles.

Tuner cleaner (called Contact Cleaner above) is the best way to clean the pots, which, by the way. are 1 megohm.

Sounds like your swedish lubricant is different from WD-40. WD-40 is an aerosol spray.
