This is slightly off topic, but I've experimented with self-modifying code in BASIC. Many years ago I wrote a BASIC program to plot any arbitrary y=fn(x) function. It did this by tokenising the input string and poking it into memory. I don't think I've written a VIC game without it. The game Amidar...

Yes the userport. The 9V AC, now 12V DC, goes to pins 10 and 11 and if you followed my instructions and connected the 12V to pin 6 of the power socket you should have 12V on userport 11.

C39 you can't really miss, it's big and blue, or black - usually.

The casette works fine when I use an ATX supply to power my VIC. Check that you have +12V on userport 11 and if that is ok look for ~11.3V at C39. If that is all good check CA2 (pin 39) on UAB3 is low, then Q4 base is ~6.8V and Q4 emitter is ~6V. After that it's the connection to the casette or the ...

It's about the right size for its time. Remember, when the VIC was designed 8K of RAM, which would have needed 16 2114s and a 74LS138, would just about fit in a single cart.

There's no pratical difference where the vic is turned on and off from.

For more reliable VIC operation replace the original PSU with a modern 5V/12V DC or 12V DC only PSU depending on which type of VIC it is.

Are there any troubles in the power supply not having enough load on it to work with just a Vic?
No. The minimum ATX load is a myth. If it won't run unloaded it's broken.

You only have to change the device number once, it stays changed until you change it again or power down.

You can drive 5V TTL perfectly well with 3.3V CMOS.
