Re: Popeye - **Initial Release**

Finally... I really messed up at the end and only had one life left for round 4, where I did not last long (not because it was that hard but because I messed up again). 44800 points. I may have encountered bugs and unwanted behaviour during round 3 but I was too stressed out to really take notice. N...

Re: Popeye - **Initial Release**

Yeah, I suspected it was due to technical reasons. I haven't used snapshots for training yet as it feels like cheating  The first times I entered level 3, i felt very disoriented and did not know what strategy to use, but now after a few plays, I think I am equipped to deal with it. As you say...

Re: Popeye - **Initial Release**

My best is 39000 but I have yet to complete level 3 (very close though). It is so darned long! I fired up MAME yesterday. I made it to level 3 on the first go. This is surely a big compliment to the VIC-conversion - the skill carries over. But the arcade game is also easier and this is first and for...

Re: Popeye - **Initial Release**

It’s brilliant. It plays very well and a marvelous attention to all the finer details. E.g., I love the intro with Brutus sliding in and Popeye offering a flower. Quite hard but I think it was right to remove the “auto-fire-punch”. I had a lot of trouble with level 2. My best so far is 24440 and I h...

Re: Games we want to see

I drooled over magazine reviews of Keystone Kapers and was very envious of Atari 2600 owners. It was never converted to C64 either. One of the entries in RGCD's 2012 cartridge competition was called "Rent-a-Cop", and played like KK iirc. Thanks. Yes, I actually made a search for Keystone ...

Re: Games we want to see

I am missing those Activision classics for the VIC HERO Keystone Kapers I played HERO quite a bit on the C64 and I agree that it would make a very nice VIC-game. I drooled over magazine reviews of Keystone Kapers and was very envious of Atari 2600 owners. It was never converted to C64 either. I kno...

Re: My C16/Plus4 games

I had a short go at Mr Angry Dude and was really impressed. Very tricky indeed. I couldn't finish level 3 this time but I will have another go later. I always loved games like Solomon's Key but this takes that basic concept to another level. Fascinating... It seems like it can be played and solved i...

Re: Halloween animation

Horror movie material indeed. A good fit for the mysterious-connection-found-in-all-the-homes-of-the-victims-of-what-first-seemed-like-bizarre-suicides.

Re: Bubble Bobble

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9d/Bubblebobble.png Another arcade hit that's been ported to every washing machine out there. Cute dinosaurs spitting bubbles and collecting treats to finally vanish the Super Drunk. Not me! Hands off! Sheesh! 100 levels first! http://www.adamdawes.com/re...

Re: WIP - Popeye

Wonderful. If I was twelve again, I would have an extatic fit! Makes me wonder what Udo Gertz (who did the great popeyeesque Bongo for Vic) could have come up with. http://www.gb64.com/Screenshots/B/Bongo_1.png Mind you, this is the C64 version. His art looked better on Vic as he then had less pixel...

Re: WIP - Popeye

According to a newsgroup post from 2006, Parker Brothers at least began a Vic-20 version of Popeye. http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Comp/comp.sys.cbm/2006-01/msg00915.html I used to have prototype cartridges of Q-Bert and Popeye (the regular Parker black cartridges, without labels, only hand...

Re: WIP:Popeye

As for the hearts they need to be multicolor otherwise they affect everything they "float" over. I really wanted them red, but then you cant see them againt the background (much of which is also red). On the arcade original they tilt in the wind, but there isn't the resoloution in a singl...

Re: WIP - Popeye

Well, I admit the Popeye sprite would probably work better in Popeye Jr or somthing :)
Maybe I will try to make another one with a somewhat smaller head.

Re: WIP - Popeye

Just for fun I played a bit with your online tools (wow!) and used red, white & blue. http://www.athleticdesign.se/temp/popeye-bruto.png I found it very challenging to make anything that even vaguely looks like Popeye and Brutus. Popeye should look smaller than Brutus and therefore not fill out ...

Re: WIP - Popeye

Regarding the color scheme - there is a superb looking old clone for the Color Computer - Sailor Man- that has a very limited palette and can perhaps serve as inspiration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob1FFwjnnf8 I also note that they use black background for the boat level, which does look bette...
