There are many game cartridges which try to self modify as a means of copy protection. Omega Race was one of them.

Re: GandALF, substitute for the MOS 325572-01

From Ray Carlsen: Francois, I'm happy to report that your module works fine. I ran two drives and copied whole disks and then individual files back and forth, first with a copy program in a stock drive and then with JiffyDOS installed which runs faster and is more critical of misalignment and other ...

Re: 486's that valuable??

People who didn't know better blamed Microsoft for that. I worked for a company once and my boss used to yell at Bill Gates every time his MS Word would crash or do something he didn't like. I guess you could say that Gates (at the time) was ultimately responsible for all things MS but come on....l...

Re: 486's that valuable??

Since Windows NT did not run well on pre 486DX machines, I never had any interest in them. I worked for a networking company years ago and we installed Windows NT (4) on many customers' servers. We had mixed feelings for it. We had one server actually blue-screen because we swapped out the keyboard...

Re: 486's that valuable??

For me, the 486 is really about nostalgia. A 486DX2/66 was the first computer I ever built myself from parts. Me too, incidentally. I moved from an Amiga 3000 to a '486 DX2/66 in late 1994 but coming from the Amiga, I had rather strict criterias. I elected to install Windows NT 3.51 back then becau...

Re: 486's that valuable??

Maybe there is something I don't get but I have a hard time understanding the relevance of going for a '486 machine. I maintain an old P3-600MHz Win98SE machine because it has a 3dfx Voodoo 4 AGP card and some games only run with this brand (3dfx - GLIDE) of video card. However, this machine can run...

Re: Scott Adams cart images

I have been playing around with loading the Scott Adams adventure games into my 32K expansion. The behaviour seems a little bit odd both in VICE and on real hardware. The Scott Adams games load into BLK2 ($4000-$5ffff) and BLK3 ($6000-$7fff). My memory expansion (Dorktronic 32K) allows each of BLK1...

It was discussed in the past but I suggest you try this: https://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/

Re: GandALF, substitute for the MOS 325572-01

Last year, Sylvain, Fredric and i did develop a replacement for the 6526/8520/8521 CIA used in the C64, C128, C128D, 1571, 1581 and Amiga line of computers. sounds like something jimmy would write 8) Are you insinuating it does not exist ? If you are, I consider your post as trolling. The project's...

Re: GandALF, substitute for the MOS 325572-01

My original point was that I was surprised that a drop-in replacement for the VIC-1 or VIC-2 haven't been done (yes, with FPGA) because the C64 and VIC-20 are so popular in the retro scene. I am not surprised at all. Last year, Sylvain, Fredric and i did develop a replacement for the 6526/8520/8521...

Re: Brainstorming

Out of curiosity, why are the blocks mirrored? Because VIC-20 carts followed a specific pattern when it comes to address space usage. This pattern actually made them easier to back-up and clone. Except for the 5 Scott Adams cartridges, none of the VIC-20 game cartridges that I know of ever used the...
