Yes I have a non functioning VIC20. Could be a connection issue, there are a lot of recommendations to unplug and replug the socketed chips, which is a good idea. You may have moved a chip ever so slightly during cleaning that caused a connection to be remade and correct the problem. I believe the C...

The radio hash is produced by the VIC chip, the noise is a good sign the VIC chip is working.

I read a commentary on this forum where a guy commented on making a manufacturer run of the VIC chips but said the need is not great enough to payback the expense of rerunning production of the VIC chip. :(

Wow, that is a lot of money to ship it to Italy. Really puts it out of range of buying.

I believe you will have to buy untested vics for sale on ebay and take your chances that the VIC chip is good in what you buy. I bought the mother board, no case or power supply, and found the VIC chip was bad on the mother board I bought. You pays your money and takes your chances. At least there a...

You had some very good questions that I hope someone answers. Your posting is the first sign of real technical analysis, thank you. To bad the fix ended up in massaging for a solution, that doesn't help at all.

I swapped out VIC20 A's VIC chip, the one in the metal enclosure with the VIC20 B's VIC chip. VIC20 B screen with random characters cleared up and now have a second working VIC20. The screen colors are a bit smeared even in composite mode.

So I need a VIC chip to put into VIC20 A.

I had a screen full of random characters and non functional keyboard.

I swapped out the VIC chip inside the metal enclosure and got my screen back and Basic function in the minimal system 3583 bytes.

Will get more later. Using composite video to TV. VIC20 B There is a checker board pattern of random characters fill t...

Mike BTW The working VIC is no longer working. I tried to fix it working in normal mode without extension card by replacing two RAM chips along with sockets. I read in another post he removed the sockets and soldered directly in and the VIC is now working. These are wicked little boxes when broken. ...
