If you have access to a scope it would be worth comparing the read/write lines during the diagnostic test.

If it's working, can't be much wrong with it. Check continuity right through to your diag board.
At the risk of being patronising, are you certain you have the connector on the right way around? It isn't keyed and can go on both ways, I've written top on mine

I like the ideas in the BBC version which sounds reasonable. Also the number of monsters could be reduced, such as the platforms, if needed.. Out of interest and as something I've never really used. What's the benefits of using a monitor rather than just going straight to an assembler and using the VICE monitor.

I would suggest separating the problem into two parts..
1) Learning 6502
2) Learning to program the VIc hardware in 6502.
I would use the many web based resources (google 6502 assembler online) for part 1 then you will find part 2 much easier.
