Re: Vic-20 the kamikaze computer?
There's no doubt the NES was instrumental in "reigniting" home console gaming in North America. My beef with the current narrative about the "crash" was that the NES saved all video gaming, which is a nice story but patently untrue. The NES was the undisputed winner in late 80s N...

Re: Vic-20 the kamikaze computer?
The "video game crash" only occurred in the US. Outside of the US, in Europe and Japan, we merrily carried on playing games at home, but on computers instead, and Nintendo launched the Famicom in 1983, so it was like nothing really changed there. I'm from the US. I didn't see a video game...

Re: Best looking 8bit computer?
I second the Atari 800XL. It is sleek and well proportioned with those nice brushed aluminum accents. The cart slot on the top is a good thing. Although I wish the case was actually gray and black instead of light beige and dark brown. I prefer the appearance of the VIC-20 to the C64, specifically t...

Re: My future setup
I like it :) My setup is somewhat similar except I'm still waiting for my spot in the queue to get a Mega Cart. I don't have a printer, either, but that's because I haven't figured out a reason to have one. Then again, I still have a 1541 hooked up even though I use the SD for everything, so maybe I...

Re: Best and Worst stock controllers
Favorites: Astrocade: combines joystick and paddles in one easy to use controller that is shockingly ergonomic for the 1970s. Vectrex: play with the controller on a flat surface and it's like a mini arcade controller, perfect for the system and its games. Genesis: comfortable and durable, good for h...

After reading that editorial, I suspect Mr. Hess' lack of results with the VIC would have been the same had he purchased a different computer.

Personally, I like the current title screen. I hope it isn't replaced unless Exin's artwork is an undeniable improvement.Exin wrote: I would like to make a better title screen than this dithered piece of hell.![]()

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?
I wonder if the result would have been the same on a non-vic-20 forum  Assuming you asked the question in a diverse forum of people with actual knowledge and/or experience, you would probably still get the same answer: the ZX-81 was the weakest mainstream computer of its time. It didn't even h...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?
My vote for "perceived least powerful" is for the ZX-80 and 81 as well. Even in the early 80s, people who didn't know much about computers could still recognize that B&W, screen flickering, and a creaky eggshell thin plastic case were not a good thing. Admittedly, I was so desperate to...

Re: TRS-80 for Dummies
TRS-80 is like Commodore, TRS-80 is a brand (Tandy Radio Shack Z-80, the name later applied to models with other processors) with different models that are not compatible with one another. The Model II cannot run Model I software. The Model III cannot run Model II software but can run most Model I s...

Yes, I can understand why things like system calls and memory pokes are not compatible, but when Microsoft was writing a tokenized abstract basic for just about every compute r (Apple, Commodore, Tandy, MSX, IBM, even the friggin' Altair), why didn't they make the most generic parts of the BASIC la...
