Re: Home computing pioneer Sir Clive Sinclair dies aged 81

RIP Sir Clive. In 1982, the 11 year old me really wanted a 48K Spectrum, I got a VIC 20 starter pack and a 16K RAM Pack. It didn't turn out so bad, later we got a Spectrum +3, but I preferred the VIC. It was only 20 years ago that I finally got a 48K Spectrum, that original, rubber key model was the...

Re: Thoughts on the Dragon 32 and 64?

I have a Dragon 32 that my Brother In Law gave me a few years ago. It only had 8K workingwhen I got it though. Luckily a helpful chap fixed it back up to 32K, and all is good again. Even in 1982 I thought they seemed like a nice machine, but finally getting my hands on one, they're a decent machine,...

Re: Were there ever compatibility problems between different versions of the VIC 20?

I think this was an exploratory post about compatibility issues between Vic20 variants based on experience 37 years ago not currently Exacly this Vic-20Ian yes but yes the tape issues were often copies or saving on a friend's tape deck not working on yours due to Azimuth. Agreed, and this is quite ...

Re: Were there ever compatibility problems between different versions of the VIC 20?

The description of the issue at hand is pretty vague. You neither name the programs/games affected nor the symptoms. Actually I named two programs. The symptom was simply that they would not load. IIRC one of them did load eventually, but was corrupted. We are actually talking about events that too...

Re: Were there ever compatibility problems between different versions of the VIC 20?

The only significant difference (of a digital nature) between the original version and the CR was the change of RAM from 2114s to 2016s. This shouldn't be detectable by software. Perhaps those result in a different power up (non initialized) RAM content? There are a surprising number of vic20 progr...

Re: Were there ever compatibility problems between different versions of the VIC 20?

Obviously there was the original two prong VIC 20, and then the Cost Reduced Version; were there any compatibility issues between the two machines? I obviously know about expansion compatibilty issues 3K/8K/16K/32K/35K, that's not what I'm talking about. I just remember there were some games (don't...

Re: 1530/1531 Datasette Unit - How many made?

Yes, I agree with you Orion70. The 1541 was a late 80s, early 90s thing mostly here in the UK too. Put simply, there was not a sufficient advantage in owning one, especially when one considers the cost involved and the general lack of commercial software. The machine that nearly always had a disk dr...

Re: 1530/1531 Datasette Unit - How many made?

Interesting r.cade. At the risk of appearing thick, what exactly are we looking at here? Is this basically a summary of the different types of serial numbers and the amounts within that range? Can you tell from serial numbers when a particular C64 was likely to have been made? Do you also have seria...

I always thought the sales of the C64 was more like 17 million.

Re: 1530/1531 Datasette Unit - How many made?

Sales figures is what settles this, not distant memories. You can't really claim knowledge any more than I can, all you can claim is your experience. I am happy to accept that your experience in Germany may well have been different from my experience in the UK, but Germany does not equal Europe, onl...

Re: 1530/1531 Datasette Unit - How many made?

The impression of tape being more common might have been fed from the ZX Spectrum, where tape was the dominant storage (and the ZX being much more popular in UK than the rest of Europe) and possibly also from the flood of those M.A.D. tape titles - which had been a good reason for me as well to kee...

Re: 1530/1531 Datasette Unit - How many made?

None of the above takes away from the fact that often the C64 was bundled with a 1530 anyway, exactly as the VIC 20 had been. Maybe disk drives were more popular in certain circles, and I'm sure alot of it is down to perception. Sales figures are more relevant than rose tinted glasses. I wonder how ...

Re: 1530/1531 Datasette Unit - How many made?

In the UK and Europe, the C2N was the dominant format for loading these systems. sometimes i really want to know who came up with this myth :) What makes you think it was a myth? I knew loads of people that had VIC 20s and C64s, hardly any had disk drives, and those that did bought them later, more...
