I'm coming in late here, but I thought it worth chiming in as well. Jim's loss is a great one for computing in general. His friendliness, exuberance for computing and having fun with computing, and his approachability all made him one of the "guiding spirits" of the field. I have been luck...

It's also got mains power I/O, which all other Amigas lack as a standard feature. I had to add solid state relays on a homebrew Zorro II board for mine.

And talk about a straightforward operating system! It sure looks a lot more intuitive than Intuition!

This must be a spreading disease.. do you dream in Commodore? I dreamt a few nights ago that I had found in a thrift shop an early working prototype of a VIC 64, it had the same keyboard as a VIC but with extra function keys alongside the power light. It also ran the full library of VIC20 as well a...

I'm ready for my videowall. (Fahrenheit 451, wasn't it?) I would have been shocked at the idea twenty years ago. Times change. I would not have been shocked at the idea of a living room four times the size of what I had then, however, and would have been fascinated by the idea of what I am doing as ...

I'm still not completely sold on the whole wide screen aspect ratio thing. I still look at them as half a TV screen. I hear you. The diagonal measurement comparisons between 4x3 and 16x9 screens are _very_ deceptive. Basically what I tell people is that the diagonal measurement for a wide screen ne...

I just got another CP/M system windfall a couple of weeks ago. Between that and work, it's my excuse for why I haven't been around often lately. The latest windfall: 2 Big Boards--Fully populated mainboards. 2.5MHz Z-80, 64K of RAM (in 4116's), 50-pin FDD connectors for single-density 8" drives...

You can terminate on the device, or terminate after that device on the SCSI cable if you can't find a terminator pack that fits the device. I've got a couple of drives that I don't have terminators for, so I use a cable with an additional connector and plug in a terminator after the drive. I've also...

The NTSC monitors will crop the bottom off of a PAL display on an Amiga, and the PAL monitors will show a dead area at the bottom on an NTSC game. Other than that, both types of Amigas will handle both types of software. There may be exceptions where they are doing nasty hardware tricks that I'm not...

The current plasma tubes don't have a real problem with burn-in, at least no more or even a bit less than CRTs. Overall, the current generation of tubes are very nice for game playing. The main thing is not to routinely run them at full brightness. I have mine set for between 40 and 50% of full brig...

That's neat! Of course, what I was hoping for was that the Vic had shipped with a better BASIC. The poor BASIC on it was a surprise to me after using a friend's PET. I never would have guessed that Commodore would go so far backward on that. I'll have to burn a ROM of it and play around with it some...

Windows NT was started as a separate development effort by MS while they were still developing OS/2 for IBM. The codebases are entirely separate, and the basic design of each is quite different. OS/2 has a better architecture, in my opinion, but suffered from a really poor implementation until about...

What truly moved me to the PC, on the gaming side, was Dark Forces which came in around about the same time as Doom. I found Dark Forces to be more entertaining that Doom because it consisted in more than just shooting your way through monsters. The puzzles to resolve were more appealing. I agree, ...

Fall 1975: Got a friend's Scelbi 8b on "long term loan" after he got his 8080 operating. Added 2K of static memory to it to replace the 2K of shift-register memory he had in it. Spent about $50 on the boards from which I pulled the SRAMs, made $75 on selling tested chips that were left ove...

Different manufacturers and timings, slight differences in power requirements. The pinouts are compatible, the nomenclature for the chip select and output enable will vary by manufacturer, I know the '080 and '801 both have the same sense on their lines (active low) but I don't have an '8001 sheet h...
