My laptop is five years old and I'm able to run WinVICE 2.1 as well as about a dozen other emulators including Fusion (a multi-system Sega emulator).

Can anyone tell me how many parts there are to the Introduction to BASIC series? So far, I've managed to acquire parts 1 and 2. Are there any more?

Would there be any benefit to designing a monitor for the VIC? i.e. improved sound/picture quality etc.

Also, would it be compatible with both PAL and NTSC?

I'm new to the VIC myself, but I fear your problem is with the VIC itself rather than the datasette. For the most part, the datasette just needs a bit of a head-clean or some realignment. Do you get the full 3583 Bytes on the VIC screen?
