datasette

I have an extra datasette drive, the newer style with rounded corners, in the origional box. I'm not going to need it so I thought I'd see if anyone here is looking for one. I don't always check the forum regularly so it's best to send me an e-mail to classicelectronicsguy at yahoo.

VIC keyboards

I have a few keyboards that I've saved from dead machines, while I was planning to use a couple of them to fix some of my extra machines, there's really not much point as they're just spares anyway. I'd be willing to sell whole keyboards or just key caps if anyone can use them. I don't always check ...

I believe the VIC chip can display up to 27 columns, 22 being the power on default to aviod any overscan issues. Someone correct me if I'm wrong :) This should get *pretty* close to the same amount of info on the screen. BTW, more rows should be supported too I believe.

I didn't mean that the wrong way, actually I had seen the AA forum A8 vs C64 and was thinking about it too, it seemed like there were just as many fanatics on both sides there. I agree, it's a matter of taste. The vic-20 was my first "retro-computer" and I've always had a special attachmen...

Wow, you guys are pretty hard on the Atari and it's community. There are fanatics in every community that I've seen so far. The 400/800 seem to be very well designed, I use SpartaDOS and find it way easier to use than Commodore's Basic, and the system is very expandable too. Not to start a flame war...

I have a few of them, several extra if anyone wants one. The "first" 16 bit home computer is the TI99/4 in 1979, the 99/4A is the improved version (and much much more common). You do only have 256 bytes of direct access ram unless you add a memory expansion card, which most people did. The...

I have some extra keys but don't know what's involved in removing them from the keyboard and installing replacements. Maybe someone else here knows?

Is there any reason an Amiga mouse wouldn't work? They use the 4 joystick direction inputs for X and Y data, I would think all you'd need is a little software to read it. I would love to see a game or disk utility or something similar that had mouse support.

Just a simple 5-pin DIN to composite and audio jacks will work fine. The pinout is the same as the TI99 and Atari 8 bit (as long as the Atari cable isn't s-video) so there should be someone there selling them. You can sometimes find generic DIN to 4-RCA cables used for tape recorders and such, you c...

Thanks for the link Mike, that pretty much answers my question. I had remembered some mention of PET games running on the VIC, and thought "maybe if a new 80 col chip used the same memory range as the PET it would allow programs that POKE to screen memory to run". Well, the PET's video is ...

Sorry guys maybe I wasn't 100% clear in what I was asking. I do know of the software only solutions and that there is little out there that supports 80 column hardware for the vic. I guess what I was wondering is if, for example, I made an 80 column cart that used the PET's display hardware, could I...

Best 80 column scheme for VIC-20

An 80 column cart for the Vic would be neat to have, but the hardware isn't very useful without software. I've been wondering what the best (theoretical) 40/80 column device would be to get the most software support. Of course we have the Data20 and it's family which already exist, so that's maybe t...

I'll be at the meeting Friday of this week. Sorry I didn't get to see you at this week's meeting but I was on vacation. I recently sold a couple Commodore items to Sean who runs the Commodore Computer Club in Vancouver and he seems like a great guy... hopefully some other VIC-20 owners can make it!

Thanks for everyone for the pointers! I'll have to start by getting Star Commander going. I even have a cable to connect the 1541 so I may even toy with that at some point. I'll be fun to start downloading stuff for the VIC (finally :)
