Did you ever fix your Vic-20? As was mentioned above, I do still have VIC chips in stock if you need one (though I now have somewhat fewer than I had a few weeks ago, resulting in several more working Vics. ).

You say that the drive motor stays on but does the actual drive spindle turn? I just want to be sure that the belt isn't slipping. Otherwise it really does sound like a fault I had with the 74LS14. Is the disk definitely turning? Otherwise I think you'll just have to test all the other ICs....

Without a checksum it's going to be very difficult to be sure of the ROM - if one of the address lines is flakey it'll look perfect to the human eye. You need either a checksum or a comparison it's going to be impossible. You should just be able to add all the bytes together to generate a checksum, ...

MOS ROMs are quite notorious for being a bit unreliable. I've certainly seen enough fail over the years (much more than NEC/Hitachi ones for instance). If you can get a good dump from them, though, they should be OK.
