Re: Intellivision and ColecoVision flashbacks

I bought the Atari Flashback 2 (the one that is an actual Atari 2600 in FPGA) and realliy liked it. I'm pretty excited about the upcoming Intelliivision and Colecovision flashback consoles (I hope they use FPGA): None of the new Atari, Intellivision, or ColecoVision Flashbacks use FPGAs. They're al...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

The American market saw the ZX80, ZX81, Timex Sinclair 1000, Timex Sinclair 1500, Timex Sinclair 2068, and Sinclair QL. The only ones we missed out on in the US were the pure ZX Spectrum series systems. The only one that really had notable success was the Sinclair 1000, and that was for a very brief...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

x81 always looked like a hobbyists toy Indeed I remember that they were available in kit form to build yourself. Not in the same league as the vic. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk Lots of computers were available in kit form, though, including the Apple II. That was hardly a hobbyist toy. Even ...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

[snip]... The ZX81 series actually has solid support too, but it's a very different beast and is a rather jarring experience if you're not prepared for what it actually is when going in. Even among black and white computers it's one of the more obtuse to use and function. Hmm, I don't know about th...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

The Vic-20, ZX-81/Timex Sinclair 1000, and TRS-80 MC-10 where all targeting to be low, or at least lower, cost alternatives... MC-10 probably being the least successful attempt as during it's release (1983-1984) it's big brother, the Color Computer 2, was often on sale for well below what MC-10 and...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

ZX81? Then you're going to play your games in glorious black and white. Then came Sinclairs first colour computer, ZX Spectrum. If you think that Vic-20 has small memory, ZX81 had 1Kb internal memory. ZX81 was like Vic-20, a cheap affordable computer for it's time. :) It's difficult getting any of ...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

There was the potential for all three of the original 1977 trinity to have various interactions with each other's products, i.e., Tandy selling the PET, Commodore selling the Apple II, etc., and even Atari (not part of the original trinity) selling the Apple II, but for various reasons it played out...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

Could the Spectravideo keyboard & BASIC add on for the Atari 2600, or even the official Atari BASIC cartridge be considered even weaker than the Timex Sinclair 1000 / ZX81? http://atariage.com/manual_html_page.html?SoftwareID=852 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BASIC_Programming http://www.the-lib...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

My first computer was a TimexSinclair 1000, I ended up using a huge rubber band to keep the 16k memory pack from crashing the computer. :D I think that everyone is forgetting another system that couldn't compete with the VIC, the Mattel Aquarius. Although it was probably the C64 that killed it. Tha...

Re: Is Vic-20 = THE least powerful computer in history?

I agree that it's easily the ZX81/Times Sinclair 1000. It SHOULD be the ZX80, but fewer people are familiar with that. The VIC-20 was at least competitive with other low cost computers of the time, while the ZX8x series was never competitive with anything. I don't think they were meant to be, though...

Re: TRS-80 for Dummies

Shameless plug, but my latest book released, CoCo: The Colorful History of Tandy's Underdog Computer, gives the complete history (through to the present day) of the Color Computer for those interested. There was a point, obviously, early on, where it competed directly against the VIC-20, though Comm...

Re: Avalon Hill games for the VIC (was: Avalon Hill's Nukewa

I too have a fondness for the Avalon Hill games (mostly for the classic bookshelf boxes, much like the SSI stuff) and have a large collection of them for a surprising range of platforms. Nice to see others having a similar appreciation.

Re: Release: Pooyan

Fantastic work. I look forward to trying it. Pooyan is truly one of my favorite arcade games. I played it a ton on the C-64 and other platforms as well.
