VIC-1924 Omega Race package version

A screenshot of a game just began. A cheat has been done here, normally a player dos not begin with 5 ships but with 3.

Published by Commodore International, Omega Race was a version of the classic arcade cabinet game by Midway. It came in a cartridge which fitted neatly in to the Vic 20's expansion slot. The aim of the game was to fly around the screen in any direction you wished shooting alien craft, the player could bounce or employ the use of a thruster to either move more quickly or to get out of trouble. More skillfull players could bounce off the perimeter of the gaming area to help them avoid enemy craft or mines. During the gameplay the background tune increased in tempo to alert the play that one of the ships would change into a ship which could also freely roam around the screen whilst laying mines. The ship could be controlled either by joystick or by paddles.

Omega Race was originally an arcade game. It was ported to at least Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, Commodore VIC-20 and in the year 2000 it was published on Vectrex.

  • An Extra Life was awarded at 40000, not at 100000 as in some versions.
  • Pressing down the SHIFT and F1 or F3 keys at the start gave you 5 lives instead of 3.
  • If you press CTRL, Shift and the Commodore key down in the title screen, you get to see a new screen that shows the credits.
