The cassette tape port is a .156" edge connector located on the back of the VIC-20, in between the user port and the serial bus.

This port is compatible with Commodore datasette cassette tape drives made for the PET series, the VIC-20, as well as the Commodore 64. It is sometimes used to supply power to devices attached to the serial bus such as the SD2IEC.

Pinout

Pinouts - tape.png

Pin Connection Use
A,1 GND
B,2 +5V
C,3 VIA #1 CA2* Cassette motor
D,4 VIA #2 CA1 Cassette read
E,5 VIA #2 PB3 Cassette write
F,6 VIA #1 PA6 Cassette switch
* The cassette motor line doesn't attach directly to the VIA. Rather, CA2 controls a higher-voltage source via a transistor. The Revision E schematic[A] lists this as "9V unregulated" with a 7.5v Zener Diode to ground.
